What we use
Short extracts: a riff, a chord sequence, a strumming grid, long enough to learn a movement. Never the whole song, never the artist’s recording. What the student hears in the app is played by Chris or synthesised.
The artist’s official video (YouTube) is linked, not copied: when the student presses play, the artist’s own video plays, on their YouTube account, with their views and their revenue.
Lyrics are not stored in the app. When they appear, they are the official YouTube video’s captions, read live. We copy no tablature website.
Chris’s arrangements (his way of playing a piece for a beginner) are his teaching work; the composition stays with its author.
For books and published videos
When an arrangement leaves the app (a printed book, a public video), we ask the artist or their publisher for written permission before publishing, and we credit the author. In Mauritius, rights in lyrics and music go through MASA (Mauritius Society of Authors); elsewhere, through the country’s authors’ society.
Chris’s original compositions (exercises, studies, the method’s songs, teaching sega) belong to him; students may play, record and share them to learn, not sell them.
You are an artist or a publisher
Want to see how your piece is used, ask for a different credit, or ask for its removal? Write to chrisguitartuto@gmail.com with the title. We answer within three working days and we take a disputed extract down within seven days, no argument, while we talk.
Would you rather our students learnt your songs? Write to us too: the method gives priority to Mauritian artists.
You are a student
What you learn is yours. Your takes and videos of a repertoire piece belong to you and can be shared with your teacher and your family. Posting them on social networks or selling them depends on the song author’s rights, not on us.
The frame
We rely on the teaching and short-quotation exceptions of copyright law (Switzerland, Mauritius, European Union) for extracts in the app, and on written permissions for any publication beyond it. [To be confirmed by the lawyer: exact scope of the teaching exceptions in Mauritius and Switzerland for a paid online service; possible MASA licence.]
